Air quality measurement for healthier buildings

14 December 2021

It’s important to be kept in the know when it comes to the general health of your indoor air to prevent problems and to feel confident that you can welcome people into your buildings. After all, people spend a lot of time indoors.

Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) can lead to people being less productive at work, and Sick Building Syndrome (or SBS) which can cause unpleasant symptoms such as fatigue, nausea and shortness of breath.

Meeting standards surrounding indoor air quality

On top of increasing pressure from the Health & Safety Executive for organisations to improve IAQ (we speak more about the regulatory requirements to monitor air quality here), the Government is introducing new buildings standards by 2025 that will make indoor air quality measurement evermore critical.

The standards, a change to existing building regulations, will affect new commercial and non-domestic buildings, as well as existing non-domestic premises where major building work is carried out.

The standards will include a requirement to deal with ventilation and measure indoor air quality in high-risk commercial buildings such as offices and gyms to reduce the spread of infections and prevent ill health in those who spend time in these buildings.

The importance of measuring indoor air quality parameters

Since the rise of COVID-19, the Health & Safety Executive stresses that workplaces should monitor for CO2 using NDIR monitors such as the AirAssure™ IAQ Monitor to identify poorly ventilated areas.

However, natural ventilation isn’t enough to improve indoor air quality. Poor ventilation is known to be only one of many contributing factors of poor air quality that can lead to issues such as SBS, and that’s why monitors such as the AirAssure can pick up on a range of parameters and not just CO2.

Airborne pollutants, low humidity and the presence of ozone are all contributing factors, and much harder to identify unless measured with accurate equipment.

Staying informed with accurate and effective monitoring data by measuring IAQ parameters means that you can make critical decisions to maintain certain standards and identify safer working practices, reducing the risk of any potential infections or illnesses.

Air quality and dust monitoring equipment for rent/hire and purchase

Ashtead Technology is a TSI Gold Channel Partner, meaning that you can purchase and rent/hire an extensive range of TSI’s advanced air quality & dust monitoring equipment from us.

The TSI range of indoor air quality & dust monitors is continually being developed to bring new levels of functionality to the market.

For example, the AirAssure™ IAQ Monitor, available to purchase from Ashtead Technology, continuously measures key IAQ parameters including formaldehyde, Carbon Monoxide (CO), Total Volatile Organic Compounds (tVOC), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Temperature/Relative Humidity, Particulate Matter (PM) and Barometric Pressure.

It provides this data in real-time, providing the information you need to make informed decisions to keep your buildings healthy.

The TSI BlueSky™ air quality monitor, available to rent or purchase,  is a lightweight, 6-channel particle counter designed to simultaneously measure PM1, PM2.5, PM4 and PM10 mass concentrations, in addition to measuring temperature and relative humidity all in real-time.

TSI AirAssure™ and TSI BlueSky™ units can be used with TSI Link™, a cloud platform to enable even more remote monitoring features, including customised air quality alerts, the ability to manage your devices and analytics features, and it removes the cost of data storage too as your data will be stored on TSI’s cloud. TSI Link ™ can guide you in decision-making and helps to tell a story of your air quality.

Smaller, handheld indoor air quality and dust monitors are also available to rent or purchase from Ashtead Technology, such as the TSI IAQ-Calc, TSI DustTrak models and more.

Having worked with TSI Instruments for over 10 years, our dedicated sales and technical team can work with you to identify the best solution to meet your air quality monitoring requirements.

Ashtead Technology also offers maintenance and calibration services for the TSI range of air quality monitoring equipment. Working in conjunction with TSI, all maintenance and calibration services take place at their custom facilities in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. The benefit of booking through Ashtead Technology means you can easily obtain a rental replacement to ensure your air quality monitoring tasks can continue and also benefit from our hassle-free courier service.
